Ivan is a benthic ecologist aiming to better understand the role of pelagic and sympagic carbon in benthic food webs, as these contributions of these carbon sources is expected to change with retreating ice cover. He is using biomarkers to trace carbon produced by ice algae and phytoplankton through the benthic ecosystem, to understand the importance of these different carbon sources as food for the benthos.
