Emilie is investigating the role that microbial rhodopsins may be playing during Arctic Polar night in phytoplankton. In Svalbard and other Arctic regions, polar night is often associated with a state of dormancy and inactivity for marine life, but rhodopsins are proving to be a potential light-triggered energy source during this time of darkness.
